Turbulence is among the so much not easy classical difficulties that also require resolution. yet it's not just a medical challenge: the keep watch over of turbulence and turbulent shipping are the main to many engineering difficulties. Resiliency is especially critical in the preservation of rare ecosystem types. A rare wetland type in Ohio may be the only known location for three critically endangered species and for many additional rare species. If subjected only to minimal perturbations, the wetland might be sustained for centuries. But if this wetland were to be significantly damaged, the three endangered species may be driven to extinction, and many of the other rare species may be extirpated. The wetland ecosystem which develops in that location after the perturbation will be significantly different from its predecessor.

If I were charged with altering Scripture to conform with science I would say: "In the beginning was the World, which everywhere and forever envelops us; against this external reality all human words must be measured. (Hardin, 1990) 2 This section has been reprinted with permission from The Social Contract, Vol. 9, No. 3, Spring 1999, pp. 139-145. Sustainability, Economics, and the Environment 3« Adopting the Biblical position automatically generates a dispute with the Leavises of this world. The unreliability of words is well illustrated by a story from the life ofArthur O.

In every case, the environment undergoes constant change. Some 18,000 years ago much of Canada and the northeastern United States was covered by extensive glaciers, often exceeding 1500 meters in depth. That glaciated landscape differed dramatically from the boreal conifer forests and temperate deciduous forests present there today. When environmental changes are abrupt or large scale, the ecosystem is unlikely to be sustained. In such cases, existing species are replaced by those which can better tolerate the new environmental setting; life remains, but the ecosystem is significantly altered.
