The first rumours of payments to players in rugby emerged in the late 1870s. The leaders of Yorkshire rugby initially attempted to outlaw payments to players in 1879. This proved to be ineffectual, as leading players received, at the very least, payments in kind for playing or for time taken off work for training and playing. Generous travelling expenses, legs of mutton, suits, watches, bottles of port and offers of employment were the more common forms of remuneration. ‘Poaching’, or offering players inducements to change clubs, became commonplace.
