Nesting and Mating Behaviors The Brown Pelican always nests in colonies and very often is found with neighboring colonies of herons, egrets, and cormorants. The nests may be on the ground or in trees only a few feet apart. They are constructed of sticks, leaves, and grasses, and are lined with any available green vegetation. The female does the actual construction of the nest from material the male brings to her. There are two or three white eggs, which are incubated by both parents. The yolk of these eggs is very unusual; it is deep orange rather than yellow.

It is a rather flimsy platform type of nest, which is usually unlined. Sometimes an old nest is refurbished, which appears bulkier, and occasionally it is lined with leaves or moss. The diameter approximates two feet. The three to five greenish-blue eggs are oval, with a smooth shell and no markings. Both sexes participate in the incubation of the eggs, which takes twenty-three to twenty-four days. The adults perform a nest-relief ritual each time they take a turn at incubation. The bird who has just finished its turn fluffs out its plumes and stretches out its wings in a dance-like fashion.
